Young Lieutenant Rudloff has just gotten engaged to someone else when he falls in love with the flower girl Anna, the daughter of a signalman. The different statuses and the fact that Rudloff is actually taken arouse the envy of those around him and put him under heavy pressure. Ultimately, however, Rudloff decides against his fiancée and his career and for his love for Anna.
